The Real Reason Your SBA Essentials May Feel Less Effective Lately

If your skin feels dull, dry, or irritated lately, it’s not your imagination... it could be the change in weather as we are in the cold, cozy season now! Cold air, indoor heating, and low humidity can all strip away moisture and weaken your skin barrier.

Maybe you've made no changes to your routine, but you've noticed your favorite SBA products aren't working like they use to. Here's the deal... your products can struggle to perform if your routine hasn’t adjusted for the season! Let's chat about it.

When seasons shift, so do your skin’s needs.

In warmer months, your skin naturally produces more oil and holds onto moisture better so lightweight products absorb easily. But in winter, that balance changes... the air gets drier, your skin barrier tightens, and water loss can increase.

If you’re still cleansing as often, skipping exfoliation, or using the same light layers you did in summer, you may notice your routine isn't giving you the glow you're used to.

This is EASILY remedied by adjusting a few things in your routine. By sticking with a gentle exfoliation routine, reducing how often you cleanse or changing to an oil cleanser, and layering richer balms or serums on top of your creams can help your skin get just what it needs.

Here’s some of our favorite of easy shifts to make to ensure your SBA product are working with your skin this winter:

  • Consistent & gentle exfoliation routine: Winter can trigger dry flakey skin and while you DO NOT want to overdue exfoliating, your skin may need a little help ridding those dead skin cells so your serums and balms can absorb deeply instead of sitting on the surface.
  • Use the right amount of product for your skin type: dry skin may need an extra layer or two during the winter because of the harsh weather, while oily or combo skin may only need a light balm layered in.
  • Avoid over-cleansing: stripping away natural oils can make dryness worse and trigger more breakouts. If you cleanse twice a day, STOP. Or, try replacing one of those cleansing sessions with an oil cleanse.
  • Add another layer to your routine: One of our favorite ways to promote long lasting moisture retention is layering with an occlusive, like the Sweet Dreams Glow Balm and/or the Baby & Mom Balm. This helps lock everything in and creates a protective barrier.

This cold and cozy season, it's all about skin barrier protection!
